Reading ConferringI have found Daily 5/CAFE to be an incredible way to differentiate instruction for student's reading while providing opportunities for goal setting, progress monitoring, and individualized feedback.
Giving students tools to articulate not only their goals, but also their strengths in reading, causes them to identify themselves as readers-which is half the battle. Students articulate where they are in the reading process. Instead of saying, "I can't read..." they would say, "I can read fluently, but I am working on comprehension to help me understand what I read. My goal is to stop and check for comprehension." In the CAFE model, the teacher sets appointments with students to confer with them for about 5 minutes at a time. In their short visit, the teacher listens to the student read, provides feedback, and then they set a goal together from the CAFE menu. Progress toward meeting the goal is monitored at the following appointment. |

The heart of this method is to establish a system to ensure each child is getting feedback on their reading or writing. When students aren't moving, we have documentation to show what we've tried. It takes a little planning to get it up and running, but once it's going, it pretty much runs itself.

Reader's Theater
Readers theater is an engaging way to have students practice fluency skills while building their sense of purpose for reading. The following sites provide familiar tales that have been transformed into readers theater scripts at all levels.
Reading Resources for Struggling Readers
When working with YouTube, there is always the chance there may be an ad lurking...to avoid exposing the class to an off-color ad, I recommend keeping the sound off until the video loads.
