Weather Learning Ladder
Grades 1-3
Proficiency Level 2-3 This is an example of using backward design for scaffolded intervention groups. The interventionist or classroom teacher starts with the end goal-or the standard-in mind, and then backs up to fill in the missing skills the student may need to be able to reach the goal.

Sun and Sky Learning Ladder
Kindergarten
Proficiency Level 1-3 With backward design it is essential to implement informal formative assessments throughout to gauge students current knowledge with the learning target so we do not spend unnecessary time covering material the student is already familiar with. Our ultimate priority is to keep moving students forward toward reaching those grade level goals. Many times for tracking purposes, I put a date next to the column showing when the students were able to demonstrate each step on the learning ladder.

RatiosGrades 5-6
Proficiency Level 2-3 In this math scaffold, students use a flow map to visually show each step of the word problem. When students believe they have arrived at the correct answer and all the steps in the process are visually represented, the teacher looks over their work. Clarify misconceptions. When students have the correct answer, they use the flow map as a plan to explain in writing how they found their answer.

Academic VocabularyStudents love to play with words! According to Robert Marzano, the best way to get kiddos to remember their new vocabulary is to systematically study them and then to make a game out of them. I have always found that my English Learners tend to do exceptionally well during vocabulary games. Being in a constant state of language learning has it's advantages. Our English learners have already developed their own techniques for organizing and remembering new words that make it easier for their mind to accept the new academic vocabulary. Playing games with our vocabulary can level the playing field as all students are learning the words together.
